A hose is only as strong as its weakest connection. Here's why every Big Red attack hose ships with seamless aluminum couplings engraved "1.5\" NH" — and why that matters when embers are flying.
After 42 years in manufacturing, I can tell you where products fail: at the connections. A hose jacket can be tough as nails, but if the coupling leaks, strips or doesn't thread onto your equipment, none of that matters when embers start landing on your property.
That's why I put so much attention into the couplings on Big Red, our 1¾" x 100' attack hose.
Seamless aluminum, engraved "1.5\" NH"
Every Big Red coupling is seamless aluminum, and every one is engraved 1.5" NH. No guessing, no mystery fittings. You can look at the coupling and know exactly what thread you're dealing with.
Standard firefighter thread
Big Red uses standard 1.5" NH/NST firefighter thread. That means it connects to your hydrant setup, your Gated WYE Valve and your nozzle — the same thread standard the fire service uses on its apparatus.
Service tested to 300 PSI
Big Red is printed with its size and "Service Test to 300 PSI per NFPA 1962" right on the jacket. It's an extra-thick single-jacket polyester attack hose, built for performance and longevity.
The right hose for the right job
Big Red is built for hydrant use with a Gated WYE Valve on the 2.5" side outlet. If you're running a pool pump setup, our pump kits use the 1.5" XL.01 hose instead — give me a call and I'll make sure you get the right gear.
The task at hand is fighting the embers
Good equipment is only half of it. Get hydrant training, know your setup before fire season, use common sense, and evacuate when told to. The goal is putting out embers and hotspots — not wasting water soaking a roof or yard that will dry out in seconds in wind-driven heat.
