2026 California Tax Incentives for Homeowners to Harden Your Homes Against Wildfires

Homeowners with adjusted gross income of $70,000 or less (single) or $140,000 or less (married filing jointly) may qualify for a tax credit on qualified home hardening projects.
- The credit covers 50% of eligible costs.
- Maximum credit: $1,000 per year in High Fire Hazard Severity Zones
- Maximum credit: $2,000 per year in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones
- Available for taxable years beginning 2026–2031 (subject to final passage and funding caps).
In addition to tax credits, the California Safe Homes Act (AB 888) and related CAL FIRE / Department of Insurance programs now offer direct grants to help eligible homeowners (especially lower- and moderate-income households in high-risk areas) pay for critical upgrades like fire-safe roofs and Zone 0 (5-foot ember-resistant zone) hardening. These grants can cover a substantial portion of costs and are a strong complement to any tax credit.
- Check your property’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone
- Keep detailed receipts for all hardening projects
