Choosing a Pool Fire-Defense Pump: Honda WH20 and Connection Compatibility

Your swimming pool can provide a backup water source as part of a wildfire preparedness plan. Choosing a pump means considering the whole setup: the water source, pump ports, suction hose, discharge fittings, attack hoses and nozzles.

Pump ports and hose compatibility

The Honda WH20 is a 2-inch pump. Do not assume that a hose connects directly just because its nominal diameter sounds similar. Check the size and thread type of each pump port, suction-hose connection, discharge fitting, valve and hose coupling before assembly.

A hose's diameter does not by itself establish coupling compatibility. Use the correctly matched fittings or adapters for your specific setup. Choose a pump and nozzle combination based on the manufacturer's operating instructions and your site's requirements. Hose length, elevation and fittings affect performance. Maximum pressure and maximum flow are not a promise of performance at the nozzle.

Build a practical pool-based setup

Plan the system as a whole: a suitable suction hose and strainer, matched discharge connections, attack hoses, adjustable nozzles and a gated WYE where appropriate. Confirm the pump can support the intended configuration before running multiple lines.

Practical setup guidance

  1. Place the pump on stable, level ground near the water source, following the manufacturer's placement and ventilation instructions. Operate gasoline-powered equipment outdoors, away from enclosed spaces and building openings.
  2. Connect the correctly sized suction hose and suitable strainer using compatible fittings. Position the intake according to the manufacturer's instructions and keep it clear of debris.
  3. Connect the discharge fittings, attack hose and nozzle. Check coupling sizes and thread types rather than assuming a direct fit.
  4. Prime and start the pump according to its manual. Do not assume it can run dry.
  5. Practice operating the system in advance. Monitor the water supply and use valves only as directed for your equipment.

Equipment is part of preparedness, not a reason to delay evacuation. Follow evacuation orders and emergency responders' instructions.
